What is procurement and what problems will it solve for you?

Procurement is traditionally the function that will deliver when achieving high profile targets are crucial, such as during a merger, PE acquisition, or during a turnaround. When the pressure comes from investors the Procurement departments results then get a mention in the annual report. However, until then there is a deep misalignment of the CEO and the function. The function rarely has a seat or a voice at that top table as it usually reports through a C-Suite member even when the business is a manufacturing one.

So what problems will it solve for the CEO over and above the ones demonstrated above? The function will drive bottom-line improvements, create the right supplier behaviors, and make the purchasing experience straightforward. It will also in my experience commercialize the business where this is not easily demonstrated and will also act as a filter to suppliers to ensure alignment across the business’s functions.

What is procurement and what problems will it solve for you?

Procurement is traditionally the function that will deliver when achieving high profile targets are crucial, such as during a merger, PE acquisition, or during a turnaround. When the pressure comes from investors the Procurement departments results then get a mention in the annual report. However, until then there is an almost subservient connection between the finance function and the procurement department.

So what problems will it solve I would ask why do we debate a center-led procurement function when we don’t really debate it for a finance function. Why do we discuss the alignment of the purchase-to-pay process isn’t this just common sense as it is fundamentally based around suppliers and this function is the business’s control mechanism? Also, when the business sees growth in the cost of goods or cost of services where does that target for delivery usually end up, hence this is the department that can and does in alignment with the finance function.

What is procurement and what problems will it solve for you?

Procurement is traditionally the function that gets in the way of the CIO/CTO with its tenders, bloody-mindedness when it comes to commercials, and slow processes and procedures. The IT function works at speed, it is delivering the ongoing fundamental business and as such will always need vendors to support it.

So what problems does it solve? I can only talk from the experience of having worked and supported some large IT projects and business functions. Where IT people are not commercially minded Procurement is an enabler for the IT function to focus back on development and leave a commercial function to make sure that what is delivered meets all targets. The solutions required in the supplier management mode enable the IT function to achieve more than it ever thought possible due to continual commercially minded people. Can some of those skills be imparted to the function then I would argue yes but does it want to focus away from the non-value-added activities in delivery and move to a more commercial function? I would argue that where the function works well IT tends to allocate the money and work with the Procurement department to deliver its objectives.

What is procurement and what problems will it solve for you?

Procurement is traditionally the function that doesn’t really get involved in sales. Unless there are major reciprocal trading arrangements due to commerciality then we rarely cross paths. The sales function is focused on its customers and the demands of sales are then interpreted through the operations of the business. But is that always true?

So what problems does the procurement function solve? So far in my career Procurement is the solution to the risk in the supply chain that can majorly affect the sales of the business. Procurement has been the solution in order to achieve the requirements that are set by the sales teams especially in the client pitching process through sales. This is changing, I have worked with Sales teams on packaging technology so that not only could we reduce the overall cost of packaging but at zero cost as well. We are masters in ensuring that the sponsors’ deadlines are met.
